It is all about taste.
Arsenal:
Pros-
reliable
easy maintenance
virtually no jamming being AK
folding stock
durable
Cons-
hard to find .223 AK mags around here, haven't seen them much at any gun stores
would have to pick up mags out of state being more than 20 rounds
S&W
Pros-
magazines are virtually everywhere and cheap
can switch out upper for variety of different calibers (7.62x51, 7.62x39, 6.5, 6.8, 5.45x39, etc.)
has built in rails to mount scopes, lasers, etc.
Cons-
constant maintenance
parts more expensive
can jam being AR-15 format unless has gas-piston
But from both you will have the same accuracy and will both be very expensive especially the .223 coming out of it being very expensive these days.

Good points. Although if I purchased the AK I would not go the .223 route (Ak74). I would stick to 7.62.

Apples and Oranges
The AR has far better sights, better ergonomics etc
The AK is stupid reliable and has a good cartridge for 0-300 yds
both platforms mags are cheap

The one you pictured is the .223 version and the AK-74 is 5.45x39 :hand:

I could have sworn the 74 is the .223.

nope remember the 74 was made during the Cold War when us and the Russians were brutal enemies. They did not make guns for our caliber and likewise for them. The NEW one nowadays (AK-101) are in that caliber but they are for export only. Technically the one you showed is a clone of the AK-108.

I would say build an AR-15 yourself. Buy the parts seperately. As a modular design they are very easy to assemble.
I like the AR platform due to the fact that they are endless options for them. They are much more accurate and controlable than an AK platform. Rounds can be cheap (cheap enough in bulk). AR's don't jam that much more than any other rifle, and don't really need special maintainence. Just clean and lube your rifle when you're done shooting. Jams can be mostly resolved by getting an upper with M4-style feed ramps. I've handled M16s in some real crappy conditions and they managed to fire just fine.
The S&W MP15 is gonna cost you at least $500 more than if you bought the parts seperately. ar15.com has more info than you'll ever need on the subject (conversely, they have an excellent AK section as well)

I second the AR option... so many options available on a proven platform.
I like the idea of owning several uppers down the road and swapping 'em out. (e.g. 9mm pistol upper or 50cal sniper, etc)
